Additional information

This paper describes a novel spinning process patented by the authors. The patent is now licensed to Siemens Metals Technologies, who have invested in follow-up funding and are pursuing commercialisation. As a result of the paper, PhD student Omer Music was awarded the EUR10k International KARL-KOLLE-Prize for Metal Forming, from the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Umformtechnik - the German Metal Forming Association and a 'best PhD thesis' prize in the engineering department. This paper and related work led to a successful proposal (PI: Allwood) to EPSRC for a GBP1.7M project on "Precision Guided Flexible Forming" starting in July 2013 (EP/K018108/1).
