Additional information

This work represents the first known production of gas-phase synthesized gold-decorated nanoparticles and is currently being combined with other synthesis techniques to create highly-structured engineered nanoparticles (Lei, Nanotechnology. 2013;24(33):335602). The resulting heterogeneous particles are of interest for a variety of applications for their plasmonic and catalytic properties. The work has led to the recently-funded EPSRC CASE award (Voucher-12220409) co-sponsored by Johnson Matthey whereby similar techniques will be used to produce catalysts with known ratios of platinum and palladium, a particular challenge within the industry.
