A preliminary version of this article was first presented by Samuel Sinayoko at the 16th AIAA Aeroacoustics Conference, Stockholm, 2010, where it was awarded by the Best Student Paper Prize. The research led to a proposal that resulted in a Research Fellowship awarded by CNRS, France for Dr Agarwal to spend three months at Universite de Poitiers, France (contact: Dr Peter Jordan, ID_in_audit_file@lea.univ-poitiers.fr).

The research reported in a conference version of this paper led to a grant proposal that was funded by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan (funding amount: GBP408,846; contact: Dr Sumiu Uchida, ID_in_audit_file@mhi.co.jp).
