Review and performance evaluation of aggregate weighted 'track and trigger' systems
<28> Most trigger systems used in the UK are Aggregate Weighted Track and Trigger Systems, known as Early Warning Scores (EWS). They were developed simply using clinical opinion, and have been subject to little, if any, evaluation against actual outcome data. This paper is the first rigorous evaluation of these and characterises their (relative) performance at detecting patients at significant risk of death using a dataset formed by the integration of VitalPAC data (vital signs captured at the point of care) with the hospital Patient Administration System which contains mortality at discharge. An essential precursor to Prytherch1 above.
