Double-weighted statement

This single-authored monograph presents an in-depth account of the functions and meanings of Heinrich Schütz’s music in early modern European culture, and charts the reception of this repertoire in later German cultural and musicological discourse. It is based on extensive primary research that took place over a period of five years, analysing a large body of German literary, musical and historical documents that have not previously been discussed in musicology. In the process, the author develops a novel mode of musicological writing that interweaves layers of historical inquiry from the seventeenth century to the present day.
