English abstract

Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ (d. 757 CE) was a key author of the early period, transferring the legacy of Indo-Iranian civilization to Islam. Many of his works remain unknown however, due to his ambiguous attitude towards his Arab “masters” and to their religion. Some writings attributed to him criticise Islam, presenting a dualist critique of monotheism; others fit perfectly into the framework of the religion of the conquerors. In this work, Kristó-Nagy argues Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ’s oeuvre represent the revival of the Persian intellectual elite after the post conquest trauma. The appendices include re-editions and translations of Ibn al-Muqaffa’s shorter works.
