The computational cost of simulating random fields in stochastic finite element strategies, such as polynomial chaos, is achieved using a statistical approximation to the code output, known as a Gaussian process emulator. Presented in the 2nd ECCOMAS PhD Olympiad in Aveiro, Portugal, as part of the dissertation selected to represent the UK (Evidence file: DiazDelaO1-1).
