Additional information

The paper shows how to design Proportional Integral and Derivative controllers which minimise variance subject to strict robustness constraints. The methodology was applied to engine control in SAE Technical Paper 2009-01-0235, 2009, using a spark ionization current signal. The suggestion to use this feedback method for engine C.O.V. control with laser reflected light sensing in place of the current signal was a fundamental idea in the supporting case to obtain the £708k (£900k FEC) EPSRC grant (awarded Feb 2012) 'Towards In-Combustion-Event Feedback (ICEF) Control by Laser Ignition' Grant Reference: EP/J003573/1.
