Baseline intrinsic flammability of Earth's ecosystems estimated from paleoatmospheric oxygen over the past 350 million years
This work describes unique, multidisciplinary research that applies fire safety engineering tools in solving important questions in geo- and earth sciences. It has led to new international collaborations across several disciplines (Claire Belcher, Earth System Science, c.belcher@exeter.ac.uk; Jon Yearsley, Biology & Environment Science, jon.yearsley@ucd.ie; Claudio Zaccone, Agricultural Chemistry, claudio.zaccone@unifg.it). It resulted in follow-on funding to Belcher (Marie Curie Career Integration Grant, PyroMap, PCIG10-GA-2011-303610, €100k; Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship, FILE-PIEF-GA-2009-253780, €172k) and Guillermo Rein (RAEng/Leverhulme Fellowship, £52k, g.rein@imperial.ac.uk). It also led to funded extension (UCD Earth and Natural Sciences PhD Programme, PRTLI Cycle 5, €125k, jon.yearsley@ucd.ie).
