Additional information
This Engineering/Informatics collaboration enhanced Hillston’s Roger Needham Award-winning PEPA (www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/pepa) formal algebra to model wireless heterogeneous network selection strategies. The work was funded by industry (Mobile VCE (www.mobilevce.com), Technology Strategy Board) and EPSRC (EP/C543696/1). These techniques are applied to optimise handover from cellular to WiFi to enable efficient, fast internet operation under high-traffic demand, which is currently being studied by cellular standards groups (Nigel Jefferies, Huawei, email available).
