This monograph, numbering 245 pages and 120,000 words, necessitated the collection and analysis of a substantial body of material. This included an extensive range of primary sources, from archives including the National Archives, the National Archives of Ireland (including newly-available government records), the National Library of Ireland, the Military Archives of Ireland, the University College Dublin Archives, the New York Public Library and the National Archives of the United States. In addition, the book presents a sustained engagement with extensive secondary material. It constitutes an original and wide-ranging contribution to scholarly understanding of the Irish revolution and its aftermath.
