English abstract

The book discusses key concepts and developments in the social history of religion since the Reformation. Sections analyse the significance of secularization and confessionalization as key processes of the transformation of religion, as well as major themes such as the role of religious professionals (i.e. clergy), the intersections between gender and religion, and the role of the media in religious communication. The book combines conceptual debate and reflection with pertinent historical examples, which are mostly drawn from Western European countries and Northern America. A distinctive feature of the book is its substantial discussion of sociological theories of religion.
