English abstract

The interwar years were a key period in the development of the Labour Party's organisation. The expansion of local party structures was accompanied by more professionalised approaches to running those parties, including a significant shift in ideas about the role of party agents and organisers. This article explores the tensions that developed between the ideal of a professionalised, trained and paid elite, on whom the party's future success supposedly depended, and older ideals within the Labour movement, which emphasised volunterism and the active commitment of the rank-and-file.
