Are you a vulture? Reflecting on the ethics and aesthetics of atrocity coverage and its aftermath
This chapter investigates practitioner ethics of documentary film-makers and photographers when making work in the aftermath of atrocity. It draws on self-critique from Rughani’s field notes when documenting the aftermath of caste-based murders in India, connecting this with George Rodger's Holocaust-aftermath imagery.
Contributors to this book include world-leading authors in the field: Richard Keeble, John Pilger, John Tulloch and Florian Zollmann.
NGO Karuna Trust funded Rughani’s field trip; they commissioned the photographs considered in the chapter and Rughani’s photo-essay, published in ‘Karuna 08’.
The photographs were shown at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2010) where Rughani was filmed for the documentary ‘Histories of Hatred’, London Consortium TV (2010). The research was presented (plenary paper) to the ‘Visible Evidence’ conference, Lincoln (2008) and ‘Afterlives of Monuments’ conference, London (2010).
