<02> Published in a high-ranking journal in computing and system sciences, this paper documents collaborative research with Huazhong University (China) and InterDigital Communications Corporation (US); the latter is now commercialising this research (Wang, InterDigital). A preliminary version of the paper won the best paper award at the 14th IEEE CSE-2011 conference. The paper presents an optimised application placement framework for serving concurrent web requests. In a head-to-head performance comparison with a popular placement algorithm developed by IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, this framework shows a 35% performance improvement in application response rate.
