Additional information

In an earlier chapter, the Development of Low Cost Carbon Fibre for Automotive Applications project underway at ORNL was discussed. This Chapter presents an extension of that work in which vehicle weight reduction case studies are analysed in the context of the underpinning performance and cost models. Program goals stipulate a reduction of between 50% and 65% in the cost of raw fibre. The routes to this goal together with the interdependence between performance, cost and weight saving are analysed in detail. This research is unique in scope and ambition and remains world-leading in its innovation and significance.
