Music and Decadence in European Modernism: The Case of Central and Eastern Europe (CUP, 2010)

This is the first full-length study of the significance of concepts of decadence in the contribution of music from Central and Eastern Europe to developments in modernism from the mid nineteenth-century to the end of the First World War. It considers topics of pessimism, degeneration and regeneration, deformation, hedonism, mannerism and the relationship of decadence to the avant-garde through scrutiny of music by Wagner, Strauss, Mahler, Berg, Schoenberg, Schreker, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Szymanowski, Karlowicz and Bartók.
