A chromia forming thermal barrier coating system
Improved coating protection will be needed for superalloys at intermediate temperatures in land-based gas turbines in order to use lower-grade (higher sulphur contents) or biomass-derived fuels. The paper describes the first of a new generation of such coatings. It was invented and prototyped at Birmingham (Taylor/Evans) – patent applications, WO-2010/097577-A1, US-2012-0164473-A1 – and developed further with Cranfield University (Gray/Nicholls). The paper was presented as an invited talk at DECHEMA, Frankfurt, Germany in 2009 (and published later). Follow-on funding was obtained from the TSB (BP103K), under their Carbon Abatement initiative, with Siemens as the project lead (Mr. P. Padley).
