Additional information
Defects known as double oxide film defects were shown to have a life-cycle as the internal gases react with the surrounding Al melt. This paper predicts quantitatively, for the first time, the probable lifetime of such a defect, about 2 minutes. Since this is typical of the solidification times of Al castings, this work demonstrates why Light Alloy castings have variable and unpredictable properties. This improved understanding has resulted in a patent application for an additive to eliminate or reduce the deleterious effects of double oxide films.
