Fire retardant action of mineral fillers
Endothermically decomposing mineral filler fire retardants (FR) have four different quantifiable FR effects: endothermic decomposition; heat capacity of the filler prior to decomposition; heat capacity of the filler residue; and additional heat capacity of the gas phase through the presence of water or carbon dioxide. These effects have been quantitatively modelled to predict FR behaviour. This simplistic approach is not intended to describe the FR effects of mineral fillers, but to allow those easily quantifiable effects to be eliminated from detailed mechanistic considerations. This groundbreaking work has changed the FR communities approach to mineral filler FRs.
