This peer-reviewed essay is published in a prestigious collection which brings together academics, artists and critics to discuss the cultural impact of NAKED LUNCH fifty years after publication in Paris. The central argument of this essay is that, as he moved between Paris and Tangier in the late 1950s, Burroughs’ practice was influenced by encounters with the Parisian avant-gardes of the period, notably the internationale situationniste and internationale lettriste, as well as the colonial tensions in Morocco. This argument is supported by primary sources.
