Array-controlled ultrasonic manipulation of particles in planar acoustic resonator
This paper covers the conception and demonstration of a new class of device developed with an EPSRC grant, EP/G01213, "Sonotweezers"(£4.2m), in which Cochran led the device development. It provides evidence of practical electronic control of particle position by ultrasound. The work is key in a programme whose value has been recognised by several invited talks and which has motivated the creation of a new technical topic within the IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposia, the primary conference relating to ultrasound devices internationally. The programme also had significant industry interest, with six companies involved, and licensing of a patent is currently being explored.
