English abstract

This is the first study of the colourful history and controversial films of the Bwrdd Ffilmiau Cymraeg (Welsh Film Board 1971-86) a body established with the sole purpose of producing Welsh language films. It is argued that establishing the Bwrdd was part of the battle to protect the Welsh language, driven by the language’s supporters to ensure its future. With the 1961 and 1971 censuses showing a steady decline in the number of Welsh speakers, and the democratic process proving ineffective, the establishment of the Bwrdd was one pioneering endeavour, among others, to strengthen the language through cultural means.
