Additional information

This paper for the very first time provides ship owners with a transparent decision tool and a practical guide for choosing cost effective emission control technologies. It was supported by the China Scholarship Council (GR/2010695021, Yan, Wuhan University of Technology (China), 2010-2011, £20k, http://en.csc.edu.cn/). The result was used in the feasibility study of emission reduction measures selection by Changjiang Maritime Safety Administration (CMSA) leading to an estimated emission reduction of 5% for 10 large vessels (Technical Manager, CMSA). This collaborative research has directly led to the award of a FP7 Marie Curie project (Enrich-612546, Yang, Wang & Riahi, €590k, 2013-2017).
