This work was carried out as part of an EPSRC grant (EP/D035082/1, Movchan and Jones, £144k, 2006-2009) involving Zalipaev as PDRA in collaboration with Liverpool University. This was coupled with asymptotic techniques to model the potential growth of surface defects subjected to oscillatory thermal loading in the middle part of thin-walled bridges, leading to a successful industrial collaboration with Serco Assurance Ltd on the modelling of weld structures (Senior Scientist, Serco Assurance Ltd).
