Additional information

This is an output of the EPSRC funded project EP/F060718/1 (Characterising fundamental fire protection performance of intumescent coating under realistic conditions) with substantial support from Leighspaints (Dr. A P Taylor). The current assessment method is only applicable to the standard fire condition. Based on our experimental, analytical and numerical simulation results, this paper developed a method to extract fundamental properties of intumescent coatings that can be used for different fire conditions. This groundbreaking research is being further pursued to develop a new European assessment method for intumescent coatings in a new EU FP7 proposal FIRECOAT (project ID 601593).
