Study of the role of Al, Cr and Ti additions in the microstructure of Nb–18Si–5Hf base alloys
Here we advanced new Nb-Si alloys with improved high temperature performance, achieved by optimisation of relevant phase diagrams, for application as high-pressure turbine blades for next-generation aero-engines. This output contributed important ideas for designing desirable microstructures and inspired independent research in the Chinese National Programme “Beyond Ni-superalloys” and FP7-HYSOP. The research led to the award of an iCASE-studentship with Rolls-Royce, and inspired organisation of International Symposium on “Materials for High-Temperature Applications: Next Generation Superalloys and Beyond” at TMS-2014.
