SIGNIFICANCE
Since 2008, the research has been presented in four lectures (three international). Individual projects in the book have been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2008), RIBA Architecture Open (2011) and École spéciale d’architecture in Paris (2012). Early research was shortlisted for the RIBA President's Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis Research, 2006. Sections reprinted in: Productive Uncertainty (OASE 85, 2011, Dutch/English) and The Role of Material Evidence in Architectural Research (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, 2011).
This major sole-authored book is the product of ten years of research, and is one of the first flagship volumes in the new Ashgate series on ‘Design Research in Architecture’. It is the first book to comprehensively discuss the role of chance in architecture as a critical design method. Its scale and scope are exemplary in drawing together a number of related theories and practices, creating an important contribution not only for architecture but also for art. The text is also interwoven with the author’s drawings, resulting in an innovative book that raises the bar significantly for architectural design research.
