Investigating accident causation through information network modelling
Significance of output:
Traditional approaches to accident analysis tend to be reductionist and linear in their nature. This paper introduces a novel nonlinear and prospective method that focuses on distributed situation awareness and communication. The study shows that brittle information networks are susceptible to accidents and incidents. Ultimately, this work demonstrates that the risk inherent in a complex system is dependent on the information flowing within it. The approach is being used by Gamma Aviation to propose proactive design strategies that optimize the flow of information and help work towards avoiding aviation accidents.
