The fracture and fatigue properties of cast irons used for trunk mains in the water industry
This investigation was funded by Thames Water plc and reports on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast iron, in particular fracture toughness and Paris crack growth behaviour. The results provide key insight for the water industry into parameters affecting the performance of assets in service. The work leads to the conclusion that in many situations mechanical fatigue is not likely to be a significant factor in pipe deterioration compared to other factors, in particular corrosion. The work will inform Thames's case to the regulator for large scale investment to manage cast iron assets (Thames Water contact: Nic.Clay-Michael@thameswater.co.uk).
