The effect of the ionic liquid anion in the pretreatment of pine wood chips
This paper makes an important contribution to knowledge in the rapidly advancing field of biomass processing by ionic liquids (ILs). These unique solvents offer significant potential for the highly selective processing of lignocellulosic (and other) biomass with predicted environmental and economic benefits. This is the first of 3 papers we published on this topic between 2010 and 2012 and it provides novel data and fundamental insight on the importance of the anion (and of water) in biomass processing using ILs. The exceptional solubilities of cellulose/lignocelluloses identified in this research for selected ILs has led to a patent filing (PCT/GB2011/001723).
