Additional information

The mechanical response of irregular particles during compression tests is analysed. It is shown how the susceptibility of the particle to rotation under applied compressive force depends on the particle geometry and the particle–platen friction. The rotation of the particle was found to induce a kinematic degradation in the stiffness of the system; new analytical models of this phenomenon are given. This study can be applied in pharmaceutical engineering and is fundamental for the understanding of the interparticle stress within a granular mass. It provides a new criterion for analysing data obtained by the compression of single irregular particles.
