Additional information

The strength and fatigue properties of cast iron water distribution mains were investigated for Thames Water to improve their understanding of in-service failures. Specimens were sourced from pipes which had experienced varying amounts of corrosion in service. The results indicate that mechanical fatigue can be a factor in the failure of water distribution pipes. This information was used by Thames as part of their AMP submission. The results helped form the basis of a 4-year, £1 million pound, research contract with Thames Water to investigate the failure of large diameter trunk mains that is currently underway.
