Additional information

This research, supported by Egnatia Highway, quantifyies the participation of abutments in the load-resisting system of bridges by providing high-capacity external supports against dynamic loads from extreme winds, earthquakes and breaking of vehicles. The dynamic interaction of three real bridges on the Egnatia Highway network with typical seat-type abutments was analysed utilising novel bridge-abutment modeling. The study revealed that the abutments can reduce effectively the demand, and hence the cost and the material waste, of bridge substructures. The research is being utilised in future designs of bridges subjected to lateral loads (Dr M. Tsitotas, mtsito@egnatia.gr).
