Additional information

<12>The paper offers for the first time a theoretical justification for a computational method that had been used by biologists for a long time. From a purely computational and statistical standpoint, the method may look dubious. The paper puts forward theoretical arguments that contradict this view and hence justify the past use of the method by the practitioners. The paper has been cited in prominent biological journals - Genetics (2010) and BMC Genetics (2011) and resulted in invited talk at Natural Computing Applications Forum (2010) NCAF.
