Combining experimental and modelling approaches the research presented in this paper improves our understanding of industrially significant carbonylation processes. By tailoring the reaction conditions we report for the first time the vital role of water and reactant addition sequence on product formation and selectivity. By gaining a deeper understanding of the underlying reaction mechanism high product conversions can now be achieved.
