Additional information

The first set of structural experiments on a new grade of stainless steel referred to as ‘lean duplex’, owing to its low nickel content, are presented. Low nickel content yields substantial cost reductions, without compromising other key properties for structural applications. Following detailed material characterization, element testing and nonlinear numerical modelling (also presented at keynote: IX Conference on Steel-Composite Construction, Portugal, 2013), material was shown to be well suited to load-bearing applications, and design rules were formulated. These rules have now been accepted by European and North American code committees, with both amendments/standards making direct reference to paper (contact: n.baddoo@steel-sci.com).
