Kyushu, gateway to Japan: a cultural history
This study is the first systematic history of a culturally rich region in either English or Japanese. In the context of the partial dismantling of Cold War cultural boundaries it provides an overarching interpretation of a strategically vital and rapidly changing environment. The analysis ranges from anthropology, mythology and archaeology in prehistoric times to political ideology, economics and international relations in the contemporary era. The key secondary literature is predominantly Japanese, and required considerable fieldwork to identify and access. The Japanese primary source materials consulted in varying archaic forms from periods stretching over several millennia required several years to process.
