Additional information

This account of John Osborne’s first Royal Court play makes use of original research from interviews with audience members of the original production. It is based on research into materials now housed in the V&A’s Theatre and Performance archives at Blythe House. The distinctive feature of the book, which is part of series that the author co-edited with Janelle Reinelt, Graham Saunders and Steven Barfield, is an original section on workshopping the play, which makes use of the work of final-year Rose Bruford College acting students. The book is informed throughout by research interviews with eleven theatre professionals, such as actors David Tennant, Michael Sheen and Emma Fielding, playwright David Hare and directors such as Peter Gill and Marcus Romer. Interview material from a handful of members of the public who saw the original production was also used.
