English abstract

The book makes a theoretical contribution to the two-level approach in Foreign Policy Analysis and offers original empirical research into the domestic constraints of British European policy under the Blair government. The theoretical part of the book (pp.18-138) addresses existing shortcomings of the two-level approach regarding the analysis of domestic governmental win-sets. To this purpose, it develops a theoretical framework that links the approach to principal-agent theory. Empirically, the book applies the suggested framework in case studies on British European policy towards the Amsterdam Treaty and St. Malo (large win-set) as well as on the single European currency (small win-set) (pp.139-268).
