Additional information

This paper was the subject of an invited talk at the Unsaturated Soils Technical Committee (TC106) Workshop at the 18th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in Paris 2013. (http://www.issmge2013.org/files/modules/gestion_rubriques/PROGRAM_VOKBDR.pdf). This paper describes for the first time a technique which can now be used to investigate the formation of cracks in soils during desiccation. Using laser scanning it adds the third dimension to current two-dimensional non-contact measuring methods based on digital image processing.
