Additional information

The relevant national standards (e.g. BS 5950: Part 1) do not provide guidance on serviceability deflection limits for portal frames. It has been suggested that this omission is motivated, at least in part, by the idea that simplistic limits would not reflect the complexity of the subject adequately. The evidence in this paper highlights that serviceability deflection limits should not be addressed through engineering judgement, which has serious implications for practitioners.
