This paper is based on a unique data set that spans more than 20 years of monitoring. Such studies are rare in the international literature because long-term data sets are difficult to obtain and in most cases unsuitable for use. The implications of our results in understanding landslides, based on an earlier version of this work, are highlighted in Nordvic and Nyrnes (2009, Nat. Hazards Earth Syst. Sci., 9, 713–724).
