Additional information

The numerical approach described in this paper, in particular post-buckling analysis, has since been applied to European museums and Asian major sports stadiums. As an example, the authors were funded through the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD) to use the technique to do a full simulation for the stability analyses of the railway dome of the New Guangzhou Railway Station, the biggest in Asia when constructed in 2010. The results were commended as highly useful for final design modification by chief engineer Mr Wei (zhenw@biad.com.cn), and the building was subsequently shortlisted for a World Architecture Festival award in 2011.
