The role of ‘indirect’ greenhouse gas emissions in tourism: Assessing the hidden carbon impacts from a holiday package tour
The article develops an innovative method for holistic carbon footprint assessment in tourism which draws upon the advantages of Life Cycle Assessment and GHG emission factors produced by the UK's Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The strength of the method is its ability to appraise the indirect, supply chain-related, carbon footprint which is currently overlooked. The applicability of the new method is tested on a popular tourism product, a holiday package tour. The results demonstrate that the indirect GHG emissions from tourism are significant and should not be ignored in future carbon impact assessments.
