This paper was the first report of a microring optical-add multiplexer paving the way for photonic integrated circuits. The device has been tested at a modulation speed of 2.5 Gbit/s over 25 km fibre link. The work described in this paper was the culmination of an FP7-funded multidisciplinary project (‘WAPITI’), working towards new accurate coupling technology for optical microrings (a fabrication technique that has long frustrated the development of this class of devices).
