This 384 pages research monograph examines how merchants, bankers, private associations, governments, and international organisations grappled with the challenges of doing business globally and developed the institutional underpinnings of global markets. Historical case studies are placed in the context of current debates about global governance, the regulation of markets, and the changing face of statehood. The work is based on extensive research in archives and in period academic publications. It also draws on research literatures in three separate fields (the history of international relations, economic history and legal history). The work was accepted as a Habilitation (professorial thesis) in Germany.
