<20> This paper describes a novel formal approach that addresses the criticisms of task related analyses of interactive systems. The approach uses constraints to understand user behaviour, rather than requiring normative descriptions of typical use. The work is designed to influence the FDA's formulation of user related safety requirements that are being developed to be used in a medical device certification process. It extends collaboration with Trinity College Dublin, University of Minho, Portugal and the CHI+MED project (QMUL, UCL and Swansea) and builds on existing collaborations with FDA.
