<20>This paper makes a critical contribution to recent debate about the relationship between usability and beauty, and more widely between design and engineering, which has been important in the HCI community following the publication of Blythe Monk, Wright, and Overbeeke’s book, Funology (2003, Kluwer). The paper uses a digital jewellery case study to develop a new conception of the ‘aesthetics of use’ which subsumes usability rather than counterposes it. It also offers a detailed analysis of an empathic, craft/DIY/hacking approach to digital design, which is becoming a significant theme in the CHI design community.
