Writing Women of the Fin de Siècle: Authors of Change
In addition to her essay (pp.85-97), Oulton’s research, as the Introduction (pp.1-12) outlines, positions the volume as a considered intervention in the field of fin de siècle studies, investigating a range of women’s writing from popular fiction to poetry and biography. The collection deliberately goes beyond recent critical interest in the New Woman, setting feminist writing against domestic realism and including gendered representations of public and private spaces. The scope and organisation of the volume consciously invokes the competing voices of writing by and about women, as it was interrogated (and often produced) in the late 19th century press.
